~ GARFIELD SONGS WE ALL REMEMBER ~

Garfield Vagabond Song------Garfield Fight Song-------------Garfield Alma Mater
(Come and join the chorus...)...........(Garfield High, our Alma Mater...).....(We stand to honor Garfield....)

GARFIELD VAGABOND SONG
Come and join the chorus,
Sweeping all before us,
Garfield on to victory.
White and Purple wave,
Symbols of the brave,
Garfield on to victory.
Forward, forward is the battle cry,
Garfield High School spirit shall never die.
Hear the crowd a-dinning,
Our brave team's a-winning,
Garfield on to victory!

GARFIELD FIGHT SONG
Garfield High, our Alma Mater,
We will guard thee on and on.
Let us gather round and cheer her,
Chant her glories, sing her songs.
Shout the praises of her warriors,
Sing her glories to the sky.
On to victory urge the heroes,
Of our dear old Garfield High.

GARFIELD ALMA MATER
We stand to honor Garfield
Our Alma Mater dear.
As one we sing her glories
And pledge our love sincere.
Her standards and traditions
Live on and never die.
In loyalty we sing to thee,
Dear GARFIELD HIGH.

Garfield Songs Available to GGG Members
As a special treat for GGG members with computers, and thanks to the GHS Class of '59 reunion planning committee, we have music files of all three Garfield songs (the Vagabond Song, the Fight Song, and the Alma Mater) available to send to you via e-mail, along with the words to each. Just send an e-mail message to VP and Webmaster Al Finegold, with a subject of “Garfield Songs,” and Al will reply to your message with the song files (.mp3 format) attached, and the words in the text of the reply.

The song files are not very long, so they won’t take more than a minute or two to download. They should be playable on your computer and can be copied to your portable music player or to a CD and played on your home or portable CD player or in some newer car systems. Contact Al at afinegold@msn.com.

*IMPORTANT EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS*

NEW GGG WEBSITE FEATURE: WEB ALBUMS OF GGG EVENT PHOTOS (posted 7/27/10)
A newly added feature of this website are computer web albums of photos of GGG luncheons, board meetings, and other events. GGG classes holding reunions or other social events, who wish to have photos of those events included as an album for all members to view, should contact webmaster Al Finegold at afinegold@msn.com to have them posted.

To view the web albums, simply click on the link at the end of this article, and when that page comes up, click on the album you wish to view, then click on an individual photo to view it in a larger size or click on the Slideshow button just above the first photo, and the pictures will play automatically. You can adjust the time that each picture displays on your screen by moving your cursor to the bottom of the screen and changing the number of seconds up or down.

Of special interest are the 19 photos of the large murals that festooned the halls and rooms of Garfield before being destroyed or removed during the 2006-2008 grand remodeling of the school. Many of you will remember some of the faces and scenes depicted -- Parker Cook, Quincy Jones, Bruce Lee, cartoons by Irwin Caplan, and many others -- and we'll be getting additional information on the murals from school officials that we'll post here.

Enjoy all of them!! Click here for Web Albums

GGG BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES - JULY 14, 2010 (posted 7/27/10)
The meeting was opened at 12:30 p.m. by President Joyce Konick. In her opening remarks, she stated this a good year for GGG, highlighted so far by a very enjoyable luncheon and the awarding of 19 scholarships to Garfield High School seniors.

Board members attending were Carolyn Carpp '54, Joanne Cheever '45, Dori Cozine '47, Roger Croshaw '59, Mari Chan Eng '52, Theldona Esko '59, Al Finegold '55, Lana Finegold '59, Barb Hilliker '58, Dick Hinton '54, Lynn Jaffe '58, Mimi James '55, Joyce Konick '51, Vivian Lee '55, Diane Lovell '51, Duane Matthews '47, Madeleine Mennella '41, Mary T. Nelson '43, Marcie Riedinger '48, Jack Seeley '48, May Shimbo '53, Neal Shulman '56, Shelly Sidell '50, Lucile Spring '50, Aaron Vederoff '50, Barb Williams '51, and Pat Woodard '44. Also attending were guests Linda Shulman and Shirley Sidell.

Aaron Vederoff told us that Harriet Siegel was absent as she had been in a car accident. She is recuperating well at home and will be back with us soon.

Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Pat Woodard presented the financial report and said if there were any questions to please call her. She then announced that Ronald Lawrence '58 died recently and left GGG money in his will to fund scholarships for students going into education or journalism. The estate is in probate and details will come later. It was suggested that advice from a CPA or accountant would be helpful when matters like this occur.

Membership Report: Membership Secretary Marcie Riedinger reported that there are 700+ members. Memberships are coming in slowly since the luncheon. She thanked Theldona Esko for her much appreciated assistance in helping to set up membership lists. She also stated the new post office box mailing system is working well.

Historian: Historian Lana Finegold set up a small historical picture grouping and she will try to continue to bring a display to upcoming board meetings. The October Gazette will have an article about needed memorabilia, i.e. Arrows, Messengers, etc. There are historical items available for display at class reunions or get-togethers. Classes should contact Lana to borrow such material. Any items turned in to the historian should have the class year(s) and a brief description on the back of the item so we'll know what it is.

Scholarship Committee: Joyce Konick reported for committee chair Conrad Carter. The scholarship committee interviewed 71 applicants (63% were female) and 19 were chosen to receive scholarships. Joyce said it was a difficult decision, but a moving and interesting experience. The official awards were given out at a Garfield assembly on June 1. Richard Hinton reported that the class of '54 gave five scholarships this year, and that so far they have given a total of 51 scholarships.

Hall of Fame: Chair Neal Shulman thanked the committee for their work. There were 12 Hall of Fame nominations this year and five were honored at the annual lunch. All agreed it was an excellent group. Lovey Kershner is retiring from the committee and Al Finegold will take her place.

Gazette: Editor Carolyn Carpp said the October issue is in draft format now, and the deadline for the October issue is August 15. Willie Minor has been a considerable help with pictures and is added as a photographer on the Gazette staff. Carolyn thanked Marcie Riedinger and Al Finegold for their work in getting membership lists computerized.

Vice President:
Report - Al Finegold reported that the GGG web site is up to date. A new feature is 2010 luncheon photos linked with Garfield songs. Class rosters are up to date and will be passed out at the end of the board meeting today to class representatives. Regarding Gazette mailings, Al said if you are a paid member but do not renew, you will receive Gazettes the next year and then be dropped from the mailing list. New GGG classes will receive one complimentary issue of the Gazette (the April issue) their first year, and then must join to receive further issues. Class rosters show who has paid, and class reps should try to get memberships renewed from those that haven't paid the current year yet.

Luncheon - Al thanked the luncheon committee for their help, and especially thanked Barb Williams, who handled registration, Mary Eng, who did the booklet, and Willie Minor, photographs. Being added to the luncheon committee are Theldon Esko, who will do table seating and decorations, and Vivian Lee, who will take over the shirt sales this fall. There were 18 shirts sold at the luncheon and there are order forms on the web site and in the Gazette for those who wish to purchase the shirts. The total luncheon attendance was 241, and after expenses there was a $600 profit. Board members were positive about having the luncheon held at Garfield. The price is right, parking is satisfactory, and box lunches have many advantages. And, it's felt the student participation, enthusiasm, and entertainment is a big plus. A suggestion that the next annual luncheon be promoted as "Purple and White Day" for GGG attendees, who should wear those colors to the luncheon if they wish and have them, was well received. Please call Al Finegold with any luncheon ideas or suggestions.

Old Business: Joyce commented on attending the Garfield Foundation fundraiser. It was held at Emerald Downs and the cost was $75. She feels the Foundation may look into other ways to fundraise.

New Business: If you know of anyone who might be able to help with the various needs (class reps, treasurer's work), please let Joyce know. Re. class reps, it was suggested there be a Class Rep representative to answer questions from new class reps. This will be looked into. If you know of any roster changes, give them to Al Finegold and/or Marcie Reidinger.

New class rep Dick Arensberg '51 will be sending written thank yous to anyone who donates $25 or more to GGG scholarships or memorials.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Dixon Lovell '51
Secretary

ANNUAL GGG LUNCHEON AT GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL ON JUNE 19, 2010 - A "GROWLING" SUCCESS
The annual GGG luncheon for 2010 was held in the Garfield High School Commons (the former auditorium) on Saturday, June 19, 2010. By all measures the day was a success. Beginning at 11 am, the attendees mingled for social time with classmates they may not have seen in some time, enjoyed refreshments, went on tours of the school, viewed historical memorabilia about Garfield and the GGG, and many bought Bulldog-embroidered polo shirts and sweatshirts. A luncheon, catered by Gretchen's Shoe Box Express of Seattle, and served by Garfield Associated Student Body (ASB) students, followed, and was in turn followed by the day's program.

During the program, with immediate past president Aaron Vederoff '50 serving as MC, we heard GHS student Otieno Stephens-Terry welcome us by singing America The Beautiful, and the MC recognize Juneteenth Day, the incoming class of 1960, the GGG Class Representatives, and the 2010 Luncheon Committee. All GGG officers were then introduced, a video was played of GHS Principal Ted Howard II '85 receiving a recent $50,000 award on behalf of the school (see article below, including video link, entitled Honoring Garfield Principal Ted Howard), followed by Principal Howard providing remarks about Garfield's recent successes.

A Key Player Award was then made to longtime GGG Treasurer Pat Weber Woodard '44, and five outstanding GHS graduates were inducted into the GGG Hall of Fame by Hall of Fame Chairman Neal Shulman '56. Those honorees, who each spoke briefly, were Maury Clark, Dedicated Humanitarian, '58; Dr. Judith Goslin Hall, Genetic Researcher and Medical Educator, '57; Bettie Sing Luke, Cultural and Historic Preservationist, '59; Dr. Charles Mitchell, Leader in Education, '59; and Gail Franzke Winberg, Advocate for the Needy, '59. Writeups on each honoree will be in the October 2010 GGG Gazette.

The program concluded with thank-you's to GGG by two of the nineteen GGG scholarship awardees (graduating students Jessica Ortiz Garcia '10 and Tia Sonesouphab '10), additional musical and visual entertainment by GHS students Otieno Stephens-Terry, Adam Stansell, Graham Davis, and two dancing Bulldog Mascots, and the entire crowd singing the Garfield Alma Mater song. The event ended about 2 pm.

A total of 260 GGG members and their guests registered for the luncheon, with 241 in attendance. The top five class registrations (members and guests) were the classes of 1959-44; 1951-24; 1949-22; 1955-19; and 1950-16. A special thanks to those classes and their class representatives. And a very special thanks to Jim Valiere, GHS Activities Coordinator & Athletic Director, who was the liaison and coordinator from the school's end, made all logistical arrangements, and obtained and supervised the student helpers. Income from the event slightly exceeded expenses, so the day was a financial success as well.

Photographs of the event were taken and processed by GGG contributing photographer Willie Minor '58, and a slideshow of them may be viewed, accompanied by the "Big 3" Garfield school songs, by clicking here. Names of luncheon guests in each photo, keyed to the picture numbers, are here. Words to the three songs are at the top of this page.

SADIE, SADIE, WHAT A LADY: GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL'S 102-YEAR YOUNG KEEPSAKE. HER DVD IS AVAILABLE FOR SALE TO BENEFIT GGG SCHOLARSHIS (posted 8/14/09)
All of you who were at the Garfield Golden Grads (GGG) luncheon on June 20, 2009 at Garfield High School saw the wonderful DVD video made for the occasion by Sadie Steinberg Mintz, the 102-year old Garfield graduate [103 years old and still going strong as of Feb. 26, 2010!!], Class of 1923, and inductee into the 2009 GGG Hall of Fame. Sadie lives in Los Angeles, is a one-of-a-kind Hollywood legend who has been photographed with such youngsters as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, once had Mary Pickford as a landlady, and has more personality and energy at 102 than many of us did at age 22!

Sadie has graciously given us permission to sell copies of her DVD, her tribute to "growing up Garfield," with the net proceeds going into the GGG General Scholarship Fund. To make it accessible to as many Garfield alums and other Garfield High School supporters as possible, we've priced the DVD at $10 each, or two for $15 for those who would like to buy an extra copy as a gift for a friend or relative, or as a "reunion" gift for a former classmate/friend.

To order a copy of the DVD, either (1) print and fill out the "Sadie DVD" Order Form on this website, or (2) complete the "Sadie DVD" form in the October 2009 issue of the GGG Gazette, or (3) simply include your name, address, phone number, and email address on a sheet of paper -- please PRINT clearly -- and mention the Sadie DVD. Send your order, along with your $10 or $15 check made payable to Garfield Golden Grads Scholarship, to Joyce Konick, 16971 65th Lane NE, Kenmore, WA 98028, or to Al Finegold, 1414-179th Ave. NE, Bellevue, WA 98008. DVDs will be sent out shortly after receipt of your order. Check the GGG website for any further information on the DVD, or on any short mailing delays because of vacations.

And please know that the net proceeds from sales of the DVD will be going to a great cause -- scholarships for meritorious, college--bound Garfield seniors whose applications have been screened by both the school and the GGG Scholarship Committee.
